I thought I was editting the existing contacts form; added a new tabbed
sheet. I thought I was being smart by clicking save every so often (I never
published it), until I went to open the form later in the day only to find...
well that I couldn't find it. ANY ideas????? Thank you so much!!!

If you just clicked save, then you saved a contact in your Contacts folder. Look for it there. Forms generally need to be published to be useful, but you can save backup copies as .oft files with the File | Save As command.

Thanks Sue! That makes perfect sense now. So I should be able to delete all
the info in this saved contact (created a blank record) and then publish it,
no? Thanks again.

Yes, that should work fine.
