edits and sound

Hello there. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this irritating
problem.
On about 30 - 40% of edits. That is the join between 2 clips in the time
line. When I record it back to my camera the sound briefly cuts out at the
edit point. It plays okay within Movie Maker, but when I transfer it to
camera it cuts out on the final tape. Obviously this is rather undesirable,
especially in a film with lots of edits.
It's doesn't look good with the sound cutting out at all the edit points

I'm hoping there is an easy fix for this because I've spent the weekend
editing a film and I really don't fancy repeating the process in some other
editing program!
Thanks.

Hi There,

I have heard that this is because Movie Maker starts abandoning things when
resources start to drop in favor of maintaining the speed, But I understand
that this undesirable effect is the result of what some call, "Just in
Time" threads...basically if the thread is not ready when its needed it is
discarded.

There are perhaps two possibilities.

1) The codec in use is not up to it...just not lean and fast enough
2) Your system is not up to it.

Actually one is the other side of the coin to the other if you see what I
mean.

I would first off go to the acceleration and codecs section which is under
problem solving at www.papajohn.org. Give that a try first.

I have another program that has some fantastic abilities. I can not render
a whole 1 hour video using it though....it can take many days which is just
not on. So what I do is transfer the bit I want the better effect on to my
other program and send the result back to Movie Maker to finish things off.
It works very well and that may be your solution. Work on your transitions
and effects creating an ever larger file as you go and deleting the
redundant stuff you leave behind. Do this until you have a complete movie
on the hard drive. THEN, start a new project and load the completed movie
into it. From this position send it to your camera. There is no processing
of data as such...its already been done. All your system has to do is move
it from one location to the other, and it also leaves you in a convenient
position if it still fails. There is a program called WINDV If you type
that name in your browser it will automatically search for the
program...click on the appropriate link and grab it. This program has one
purpose only...the transfer of data to or from your camera.

Good luck !!

I don't think its because my computer is not powerful enough. It a new 'mid
range' 2.6Ghz 512mb Radeon9800 graphics. How powerful a computer do you need
to run this program?

Am I right that you're suggesting I save the rendered movie as a DV-AVI
file, then open that in a new project and send it to the camera. I'll give
that a go.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Your machine is plenty powerful enough then. You should note that 512Meg of
ram is at the bottom end of sufficient if you see what I mean.

Yes you got it on the DV-AVI front. You can either load that back into MM2
or you could get a program called WINDV whose only purpose is to capture or
send back to a Camera and send the DV-AVI back that way.

If all of this fails.... Consider removing the firwire card and very
carefully cleaning the contacts using a slightly damp lint free cloth. Then
dry contacts etc. Also using a hoover clean the PCI slot in the hope of
removing dust/hair from slot. If you have a meter try measuring cross
connection or broken connection in each of either the 4 or 6 cables in the
firewire cable, there should be next to no resistance at all. Its a right
game doing it.

If there is still no improvement you are down to trying your camera on some
one else's machine, one which already has a known good firewire setup and
if good, try your firewire card in their machine.

As a last resort, standing well back from the machine. Shout at it very
loudly and slowly reminding it of its place in the world!! At the same time
wave a 2lb or greater lump hammer at it (I can supply these at a good
price)

Yes, I am too. Running 1.6Ghz mobile 512MB RAM, 9000 ATI
Ratheon in a Thinkpad. However, preview runs aren't so
smooth either, though this system is suppose to be more
than meeting requirements.

The audio breaks really affect continuity.

I have yet to find any resolution. The "Patches" thread
about Page 4 has previous discussions regarding things of
this nature.

A BIG frustration.

Yep, yep, yep. No kidding.

I believe PapaJohn found he did have the same problem on
his webvideo example and is currently looking into this.

I you find an answer please post it.

Thanks.

Anthony.

I had something like this, too. I ended up with two problems that
might help you. The first problem I found was the MM2 didn't auto cut
my clips correctly. I had about a 1/4 of a second of the previous clip
in front of the "main" clip. I then had another problem of the added
music cutting out during some transitions. I found that if I added
..WAV music instead of the .WMA format, the editor was a happier
person. :-)

HTH somebody...
