I'm planning to buy a new laptop with Santa Rosa chipset & have 4Gb of
memory. I'm planning on installing Vista Ultimate 32 bit on it. Will I be
getting any real performance gain with 4Gb memory? Will the OS be able to
make use of the entire memory? Any suggestion are welcome.

dear mahesh! It is the graphic card that is very important for obtaining max
performance .though santa rosa has got better onbord graphics it will be
better that you go for systems with discrete cards ,Maybe you should wait for
few more weeks for such systems.

Hello ajax, I'm looking at Sony Vaio FZ series with nVidia graphics. But my
biggest concern is about the main memory. I'm worried if I will be able to
make use of the entire 4GB or not.

I am sure 4 GB of ram will be a waste considering the expense
involved(>1000bucks) / Even 2 Gb will be adequate for the Os vista
ultimate/I am sure the latest geforce graphic card will be very good in
supporting all the 3D aero features,
however if money grows on trees definitely you can customize for 4 or even
6 Gb ram!

Hi Ajax, Thanks for the info. I'm worried about the issue of Vista (32bit)
not being able to detect the entire 4Gb of memory. Will it be an issue in the
new chipset as well?

2G seems to be the sweet spot for Vista memory, with few people reporting
performance improvements above that unless they have unusually
memory-intensive applications.

Normally you can only see around 3G, even when there is 4G installed,
because several hundred MB of the address space is reserved for
memory-mapped I/O, video memory, etc. However, some of the latest BIOSs do
have an option to remap this above the 4G address space, thus making the
rest of your RAM useable.

You would need to check with the PC manufacturer if the BIOS supports this.

You could consider installing 64-bit Vista, which avoids this problem.
However, it introduces problems with drivers (which are currently much more
difficult to get).

Steve, That was some real usefull information. The manufacturer says that the
system supports 4Gb, but the OS will not be able to use some of it about 3Gb
as it'll be used by the devices. Considering the fact that the laptop is
equipped with Intel Core2Duo processor, can I install 64bit Vista on it?
