first off I'm very new at this..........we have various large/long WMV that
need to be shorten in length and size in order to upload them, share them
with friends of ours. Is WMM the program I want to use to do this, if so is
there a site for dummies like me to learn how step by step? I have looked,
loaded a file or two into WMM and have no idea what to do.

thanking you in advance and yes I'm running Windows XP.

check my website's Online > Tutorials and References page... there are many
online items that you can use. And my Offline > Books and Training page has
others if you prefer them.

Short answer is Yes, MM can do this.

Google Movie Maker tutorials, go to You Tube and search
for Movie Maker. And, of course, Papa John's place is an
excellent source for MM info. Regards, Saga

=====================================
Just wondering...how large are these .wmv files?
Might be worth a try to simply upload the files as
is to a site on the net and send your recipients the
link to download them.

Two tutorials...the first is on splitting
and the second is on saving.

"Splitting A Clip In MM2.1"

Drag the video/audio clip to the
Timeline.

Play the video/audio by clicking the
"Play" button under the view screen.

You will see the Playback Indicator
(vertical line) advancing across the
timeline.

Click the "Pause" button at the point
where you wish to trim and type...
Ctrl+L or click the "Split" button at the
bottom of the view screen.
(you can also make adjustments by
dragging the Playback Indicator)

Make as many splits as you want and
remove the unwanted clips by right
click / delete. (this deletion does not
affect the original file)

And...Movie Maker 2.1 only displays every
other frame. In order to see all frames, the
following info from PapaJohn may be useful:

===

Movie Maker 2 shows you every-other-frame
when doing project editing. MM1 and Movie
Maker in Vista show you each frame.

It's usually not a problem when skipping over
the in-between frames, but sometimes you
notice a flickering frame in a clip that is a 'stray',
and you can't see or cut it out.

If you apply the Slow - Down - Half video effect
to a clip in the timeline, you are then seeing
each frame rather than every other one. You
can see the problem frame and split it out.
Then remove the effect from the clip to return
it to normal.

How to save a video in Movie Maker

To save as a .wmv movie file...
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Tick...'Best Quality For My Computer'
Next/
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

Also, you may find it useful to use
a custom profile:

To save as an .avi movie file...
(and several other options)
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Show More Choices /
Other Settings /
Open the drop window and choose...DV-AVI /
Next /
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...
