Editing what loads at startup, pre-fetch?

I am loading far to many stay resident programs on
startup, some are seen on the taskbar, some files can be
removed via there program setups, others not, i.e. many I
believe are called pre-fetch files, how do I edit this so
that I can minimise startup files to only those that are
necessary for normal running plus what I require?, any
ideas?

First check the programs for disabling the auto startup
option, then go to start/programs/auto start, and delete
the shortcuts here you don't want to load.
If you still have some programs you can't disable to auto-
load at startup...go to start/run...type: MSCONFIG and go
to the startup tab...uncheck what you don't want or need
to auto load.
