Editing VHS films on XP and Movie Maker

I am completely new to this game. My father has long term loaned us
his VHS video camera and I would like to be able to edit the films we
make and possibly save them as DVDs. I need advice on the best way to
import the film from camera to PC; is Windows Movie Maker the best
program for a beginner to use and is it relatively straight forward to
record to DVD. I have a satnd alone Phillips DVD recorder

I need advice both on process and the best hardware and softwre to
use. As I said, I am a complete novice.

One further thing, I need to get up to speed with this in the next
month; we are expecting our first child.
