Editing spreadsheet & charts in Powerpoint

I run Microsoft Office XP Pro on a stand alone PC and have been developed
problems with editing objects (such as spreadsheets or charts) in PowerPoint
2002.

I used to be able to insert and edit spreadsheets and charts, but recently,
when I attempt to insert or edit an embedded spreadsheet or chart, I get the
following message:

"Microsoft can't start the application required to open this object. An
error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you
like to repair this feature now?

When I press YES, It gives the following message:

The server application, source file, or item can't be found, or returned an
unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application.

I have done a repair and a complete reinstallation of Microsoft Office to no
avail.

Would appreciate any help or files to fix this problem

Not really. The problem is with spreadsheets and charts, not Org Charts. I
cannot insert of edit them. Also I am running Powerpoint 2002 not 2003.
 
There's a section about MS Graphs and Excel Charts in that FAQ, and the
fixes apply to 2002 as well as 2003.

The section refers to the impact of Norton Antivirus, which I have never
used (I use AVG antivirus).

Also I tried to run the fix, but it said it only applied to PowerPoint 2003
not 2002.

used (I use AVG antivirus).

Not so. While it gives *specific* information for Norton Antivirus, it goes on
to say:

Again ... Norton isn't the only culprit
Other antivirus programs include Office virus scanning features. It's always a
good idea to disable them, if only temporarily, at the first sign of trouble
with PowerPoint.
=========================================================

If AVG has any office file scanning features, try turning them off.
Also I tried to run the fix, but it said it only applied to PowerPoint 2003
not 2002.

In any case, I tried disabling AVG Antivirus, installed OrgPlus Express,
reinstalled Office without SP2, re-registered Graph.exe and all the other
potential solutions.

Alas, to no avail ....

OK. Then the only other thing I can think to try is to start Excel, choose Help,
Detect and Repair and let that run its course.

If that doesn't help, you may want to give MS Tech support a call

Done a "Detect & Repair". But no joy here either.

I have now tried PowerPoint 2003 and the same problem occurs and none of the
potential solutions work either.

Looking at other posts, it seems this is a recurring problemfor other users.
Perhaps Microsoft should look at this and figure out a solution. I have
