Editing questions

1) Is it ok to defragment while in the middle of editing and just before
rendering?

2) The movie is “jerky†during running the timeline while editing. Does
this mean the movie will be “jerky†when rendered?

3) Can you rank the following as to their complexity when rendering: (1)
Cut clips (2) Transitions (3) Nudge Left (4) Video Effects?
 
Just to answer your first question. No, do not defrag in the middle of your
project. Always do it before you start a project. Some may disagree with
me, but that's what the pro's tell me and do.
 
1. Not in the "middle" of editing, but it would be ok to do it between
stages. I would suggest defragging before commencing work though.

2. Depends on what is causing the jerkiness. The file did not capture
properly so is corrupt, will always be jerky. The file is to complex for
your pc to play smoothly - given that MM will try to show you everything in
real time withour rendering - will after a render and save be fine.

3. Depends on what transition you use or effect and if you mean each one is
on the identical part of a clip, as different clips will affect teh
complexity. One with high movement will be more complex that transtioning
between two stills of a picture of green grass. Is there a reason you need
to know this? Or just interested?
 
The reason for question # 3 was I want to minimize those editing tasks that
would most jepardize the rendering process for completing successfully.

transitions and effects could be useful.

My take on them are....

1 - yes
2 - no
3 - from highest effect to lowest... effects, transitions, nudge left, cut
 
If yu use compatible file types, such as dv.avi or wmv video, wma/wmv or wav
audio and bitmap stills then it will just be a matter of time to wait for
the more complex parts of the movie to render. If you use files which work
for you, but aren't totally compatible, such as mpeg/divx/mp3 then it's pot
luck if it works or not and it could be a simple cut in an mpeg that causes
the rendering trouble.
