I have saved a Windows Movie Maker pictures and audio project which became a
..wmv in the process of uploading to a web site. Now I would like to edit it
further in Movie Maker, but when I import it back to Movie Maker the wmv
file, the collection is now of clips which combine multiple picutures and the
audio (music) I added. The question is: How do I restore the movie to its
original pieces. (Split does not seem to work). Many thanks if anyone can
help.

I'm guessing you are running Windows XP?

Sounds like you only have the completed video clip.
If you uncheck "Create clips for video files" on the
import screen the full video will be imported.

For re-editing purposes you need the .mswmm project file.

For saving a project file...you go to...File / Save Project.

For saving a movie file...you go to...File / Save Movie FIle.

Thanks very much for your reply. You noted: For re-editing purposes you need
the .mswmm project file. I guess that means that I cannot re-edit at this
point because I do not have any .mswmm files. Thanks for noting the
distinction between movie and project files. I think if I had saved the
project as a movie and then uploaded it, I would still also have the project
..mswmm file (but I didnt' so I don't have it.) Yes I am on XP.

I see that I have a mswmm version but it is still in clips that combine
several original pictures from the Collection I started with. If I could
split the clips into clips that contained just each picture I think I would
be on my way. However, the splitting does not seem to work. On the other
hand the music that I added seems to be now inseparable from the video of the
pictures on the clip, which means if I insert another picture (which is what
I want to do) then I will have to deal with the blank audio. Of course I can
just start all over again with the initial collection which is what I will do
if I have to

==================================
If you had the .mswmm project file open...all of
your source files...(pictures / video clips / music
files)...would still ne individual just as they were
when you first created the project.

You can still edit the completed movie file but
it will not have all the individual components.

In Timeline view...you can drag a copy of the
video clip to the...Audio/Music track if you want
the music separate from the video.

Forgive me but is there an actual question
in there somewhere?

Maybe starting over would be good now
that you have a better idea of what's involved.
