Hi,

Whenever I try and edit a group policy on the domain from my
workstation I edit the local policy rather than the actual policy on
the domain. I don't get any error messages, just up pops the usual
Gpedit window but with the local policy instead of the domain one I am
trying to edit.

Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

Thanks

Russell

That is as it should be for a member workstation or server. A simple way to
manage domain policy from any computer in the world is RDP into your domain
controller.

Don't use GPedit.msc.

Use GPMC, tip 6494. Introducing the Group Policy Management Console.
in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsifaq.com

Also, see
Tip 8754. The Administering Group Policy with the GPMC whitepaper.
Tip 10085. GPOVault Freeware.

Sorry my bad, should have mentioned I am already using the GPMC, its
when I try and edit a policy through the GPMC that it opens the local
policy in GPedit rather than the policy I am trying to edit.

Thanks for the reply though

Well I've been looking over this problem and it seems quite some time
ago I associated msc's with mmc.exe because trying to run any msc (ie
going start -> run -> gpedit.msc) would come up saying "access denied"
Associating msc's with mmc.exe fixed this problem but it seems to have
caused the one I'm having now. Putting the associating back to its
default won't let me run any msc's, even the gpmc.msc.

So does anyone know how to fix getting an "access is denied" error when
trying to open msc's. I've checked file security to a couple of msc's
and I have permissions to them. I can access them by right clicking
and using the 'author' command but I can't get into them just by double
clicking on the msc file.

Any ideas? thanks

After spending the last day working on this I've managed to sort this
out, by installing MMC v3. Its fixed the problem I had ages ago and
the one I've been getting trying to edit group policies.

Thanks for the help though
