No the original video clip/s are not
affected. They will still be in the original
folders where they were saved.

If you are running Vista, have alook at
the following article:

Windows VIsta -
Work with clips in Windows Movie Maker

or...
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/4467e2ab-0ac6-48a6-88c0-a5a30a73687e1033.mspx

Try the following steps for Movie
Maker 2.1...(Windows XP)

Drag your video clip to the timeline.

Add the Slow Down - Half video
effect to the clip. (this allows you
to see every frame instead of every
other frame)

Now advance through the frames
one at a time by typing Alt+Right
Arrow.

When you are ready to split the clip...
type Ctrl+L. Remove the unwanted
frames by Right Click / Delete.

When you are satisfied with the results...
you can remove the Slow Down - Half
video effect.

Also...for an expanded view of the clip
on the timeline...hold Ctrl and use the
Scroll button on your mouse...or...use
your PgUp / PgDn keys.

Once you are happy with the edited
video save it in a movie format as follows:

To save as an .avi movie file...
(and several other options)
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Show More Choices /
Other Settings /
Open the drop window and choose...DV-AVI /
Next /
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

To save as a .wmv movie file...
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Tick...'Best Quality For My Computer'
Next/
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...
