Many of the photos I've downloaded to my hard drive don't
show any value for the "Date Picture Taken" column. Is
there any way to edit this information to insert/change a
date? Can't get to it from File/Properties.

I thought about using the "Date File Created" column, but
that value is updated everytime the file copies onto
another computer.

TIA

When you say "many" don't show.....It is difficult to help you except
guessing.
Here is my guess. When you download photos from your camera to a folder, ALL
the photos will have the Date Picture Taken. Not some, not many, ALL. The
reason for this is that this information is contained in what is called the
EXIF file attached to the JPG picture file. This EXIF file contains the date
and time the picture was taken, the camera used, exposure data, etc.
Why then are you missing "many".
The only reason I can think of is that you edited some of the photos with
older photo and poor photo editing software and the software you used did
not read the EXIF file. So when you saved the edited photo, the "Date
Picture Taken" is no longer there. Update to newer and better photo editing
software so this information will still be part of the edited photo file.
Not a good idea to edit your original photo files. Make a copy of them and
edit the copy. This way you can always go back to the original file for this
information.
