A friend of mine archived all of his Digital-8 tapes to DVD and reused the
tapes. The only copy of the video is now on DVD. Is there a utility that
could convert the DVD to a format that could be edited with WMM?

Thanks,

Curt.

Hello,

One of my gadgets is a TV/DVD recorder....it creats a proper DVD o the
fly from any source including Digital TV......It is always the case when
thre is an advert or whatever that I want to remove it from the
recording.....the answewr is Nero6....I have just this moment finnished
printing the DVD Case Label for the film "When Worlds Collide"...I am a
Sci-Fi freak.

The film was recoded on the fly direct to DVD through the hardware
encoder. I then import that to Nero and get it to save it as a DV-AVI file
type 1....but you can go to type 2 if you wish. or one of several other
formats....(all the popular formats and they are all customisable)

Once you have the DV-AVI the rest will be pretty obvious....and I used
Nero 6 to create the final DVD.....the film was 1hr and 18mins long....that
will not quite fit a single layer disk and its a waste putting it on to a
Dual Layer...so using the options in Nero 6 I reduced the bitrate until it
just fits on to a single layer....the quality difference....honestly I can
not tell the difference...I have compared it to the original on-the-fly DVD
recording and although there must be a difference...I can not see it.

So the bottom line is...Nero 6 Reloaded is the answer to every part of
the process...

For maintaining quality you may like to edit it in the original mpeg2
format. VideoReDo ($50) can Cuttermaran (freewre) can do this without
re-encoding.

To convert it into an MM2 editable fomrat you should be able to use Windows
Media Encoder using custom profiles that do not compress video data. However
the standard conversion tool is VirtualDubMod.

(Google for these names for more info)

Well you can do that as well in Nero and add transitions and effects
without recoding the whole thing....but as the O.P. asked a question
specific to Movie Maker I did not bother mentioning it. I am told that you
can now buy Nero OEM for as little as $5.00...worth every cent for a two
pass professional Mpeg encoder with technical support plus ALL of the other
features Nero is usually known for. You can thenb upgrade free to Nero 6
Reloaded and get the very latest proggy

Nah...complete waste of time and effort...Computers are meant to work
for us....not the other way around...go get a program that does it all for
you without having to known all the "geek" stuff...but if you want to know
the "nerd" stuff, Nero can do that too.

I think the original answer fits the O.P.'s question, as well as many
others I am told. Thanks G. :)
