I bought an "open box special" Compaq Presario R3000. I
deleted the previous owner in user accounts, but his name
still shows up when you right click on My Computer and
then go to properties. I can do a Regedit.exe and find
all occurances of his name in various places. Can I just
cut and paste his name for mine? I am afraid of
irreversibly screwing up my registry. Any help is
apprecited.
Thanks!

Backup the key before modifying. Or, create a System Restore point (though not needed for this operation).

Ramesh gave you the fix you requested.
However unless you know exact details of the computers usage history,
I would suggest using the accompanying CDs and starting over.
This would get rid of unnecessary files as well as any spyware,
viruses or any other unknown malware.
