can anyone point me to a site that lists the processes that are
NECESSARY for start up in WINXP?

not having much luck

Hi Sean,
This is a list of the most essential processes to run XP:
csrss.exe
explorer.exe
lsass.exe
services.exe
smss.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe - There will be more than 1
System Idle Process
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe

As far as I know XP will run with just these running but someone else might
know otherwise.

Hope this Helps,

Simon.

I would say the easiest thing to do is start in Safe mode and then open the
process tab of the Task Manager and have a look at what processes are
started. In safe mode these should be the minimum OS Processes. The problem
arises when trying to give a perfect answer for everyone. As all of us
configure and use our system in different ways then different processes are
started\loaded\dropped etc. So ther really isn't any clear cut perfect answer
for everyone. As I said, start in safe mode and look at what services are
running\loaded. TTFN.
