When I go to Internet Explorer and then try to use a
general search, I get a message "The page cannot be
found" HTTP 404 - File not found Internet Explorer.

I received the Knowledge Base Article 827326 which
suggests that I run "regedit". When I do this,
the "regedit" window appears, but quickly times out and
disappears, so I cannot follow the instructions on
Article 827326.

.
I would run the system file checker tool if you have
access to a XP CD, click start, run and type in
this; "sfc /scannow" with that space after the sfc, and
you may be able to use a service pack one CD instead of a
full XP CD for it to copy any needed system files which
are found to be corrupt.
