Edit in cell

When I first enter new data into a cell, I can enter characters, but
if I press the left/right arrow keys, I am taken to the next cell.

If I then double-click on that same cell, I can use the left/right
arrow keys to move around within the cell to edit the data.

Is there a way that I can configure Excel so that it works that way
when I initially enter data into a cell -- that is, the arrow keys
stay in the cell?

I have the "Edit directly in cell" option checked.

I tried changing the "Move selection after Enter" option, but that
didn't help.

Thanks

I don't know how you can configure this to happen automatically, but, if you
press [F2] while you are in a cell, you should be able to use the Arrow Keys
to move around in it.

That's the capability I am looking for. I would like to be able to
configure Excel so that if I start entering (especially) text in a
cell, it will behave as if I had pressed F2 (but without me having to
actually press F2 each time.

What is the benefit of the default settings? Why would anyone want the
arrow keys to work like they do? I would think that when entering text
in a field, most of the time I would want the arrow keys to navigate
through the text being entered.

Am I missing something?

Yes. You are forgetting that Excel was/is designed to do calculations as its
main function, not to be a Text Editor.

The default setting when entering in a cell is to further that function.

i.e. enter = in a cell then mouse-click or using the arrow keys move to
another cell. Hit the + key and then move to another cell and <ENTER>

You now have a formula =A5 + B6

There are two modes when you are entering data in a cell.

Default is "Point" or "Enter" which you see in Status Bar. Hit F2 and the
Status Bar will change to "Edit"

Sure, originally, but it's much more than that now. There is a eck of
a lot of text editing done in Excel these days. I've personally seen
huge spreadsheets that contained 95% text and the little bit of
calculations that were done were some simple additions.
The default setting when entering in a cell is to further that function.

OK, that's cool. Now all we (I) need is a way to set the default to
"Edit". It should be easy, too, not that we have the "=" operator. If
the firtst character I enter is "=", then set it to Enter mode.
Otherwise, set it to Edt mode. Or something like that.

I guess we don't have that at present...pity.

Have you tried *triple* clicking in a new cell ?

Say, that's kind of neat. A lot of clicking, but it works.

Clever. Now where is that documented, I wonder. ;-)

I still want an option to make it the default. I also want to win the
lottery. About the same odds.

Probably the same place as the double unary, and using SumProduct() to
equate through a half-dozen variables!<g>
