Got a call from a company that wants to move from eDir to AD (commentary
excluded). I'm waiting on information regarding what versions, etc.

What is the best / preferred method? It's a rather large environment
(thousands of users, etc), and of course, time is critical.

TIA!

Use a tool like Quest's NDS Migrator - see here:

http://www.quest.com/nds_migrator/

It migrates both the objects from eDirectory to AD, and also moves the
files from Novell to Windows, preserving all the permissions and
stuff.

(PS: I was the lead dev on NDS Migrator some years ago)

I was considering that as well. I've been trying to find a comparison
matrix or the like between it and MDSS. The client wants to go as cheap
as possible, so if I can demonstrate cost savings between them, it would
be a big help.

Thanks!

Mark,

Quest is too big for this. Less than 1200 users and workstations.

Quest requires an onsite by Professional Services, $2500 per day, two
weeks minimum. Way too expensive to justify.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

No sorry, I only worked on this one NDS-to-AD migration tool and don't
know of any other ones to be taken seriously.

Of course, Microsoft itself has MSDSS + MSFMU (MS Directory
Synchronization Services + MS File Migration Utility) as part of their
server offerings, but those are quite lacking in flexibility (and more
geared towards making AD and eDirectory co-exist side-by-side)

Marc,

Thanks for your input. I don't suppose you can share any project plans
or the like?

You might have misunderstood me - I *USED TO* work on NDS Migrator as
a lead dev - a few years ago, in its infancy, but not anymore.

Also, I talked to my guys at Quest and while it's true they require PS
assistance for a project like this, there's no hard "two weeks
minimum" policy, as far as they could tell me. So maybe your sales rep
was a bit over eager to sell PS time.....

Marc

It "aids" in the migration process. The cost depends on the number of user
objects on the AD side and the number of servers on the Novell side. You can
give our sales team a call for more information on pricing as I am just on
the technical side.

Our sales number is: 877-902-5425

I don't trust any company that hides their pricing.

I agree. I've seen companies that have a "call" listed for the price that
will give different pricing for the same product. Why do companies hide the
price? To generate sales calls or as to not shock administrators shopping
for a solution but shock them over the phone instead after they talk them
into it saying this is the product they NEED for their solution?

NDS Migrator from Quest will do the object and security translation.
Migrate or Merge onto new or existing user group objects and also migrate
the associated data behind it from NFS to NTFS.
