I am at a loss what to do about it.
I removed Excel, actually the whole Office 2000 several times and reloaded
it.
no luck so far.

The only thing I can think about it is that it started when someone
e-mailed me a "MS Loancalculator" which was based on Excel

Is it possible that I with that corrupted the Excel program?

Hi

To get rid of all the problems is to re-install Windows. It might be
bit drastic, but it probably takes less time to re-install Windows the
finding the problem. Well, that's been my experience.

Good luck:)

Go search for a file called *.xlb. Delete it - This is the toolbar
customisation file so you will lose any customisations obviously. Now relaunch
Excel.

second thought
Is there maybe more than one xlb file in Excel?

Depends on whether you have more than one user profiled on the machine, as it is
linked to the profile.

What version of Excel is it?

Try the following page which lists a whole bunch of possible start up error
causes:-

http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

If one of these fixes it, then would appreciate knowing what version you are
running, and which one fixed it :-)

I think I might try Repair under
windows start button|settings|control panel
Add/remove programs applet

(or remove office and reinstall. I don't think I'd give up and reinstall
windows yet, though.)

Here's a link to a KB article about removing office 2k completely:

Registry Entries
