I am more than ready to take the plunge to ECCO - I am tired of the
Outlook ovepromise/underperform/megabloatware. I am also tired of the
M$ hammerlock applied to all the fundamental aspects of software.

I would love to support these small, yet active groups.

However, when I DLed ECCO it "searched for installed components"
and then locked up.

Any advice?

are you sure that it locked up? Ecco searches all your disks for "installed
components", and it takes a long time, so it may give the appearance of
being locked up when it really isn't. It's rather a ridiculous way to go
about installing software, but then again, Ecco development ceased in 1997.

btw ... if you want to talk to real ecco experts, join the eccopro group at
