Ebuyer / Seagate hard disc guarantee Kafufull

Hi

This is to advise people to check their warranty on the seagate web site if
the have recently bought a seagate drive from ebuyer.com. in the UK. I also
have a question about oem drives relating to this matter

I bought a hard disc from www.ebuyer.com which arrived a few days ago
product code 115418

It was described as an OEM drive with a 5 year manufacturers warranty. The
drive arrived and I thought nothing more about it. Then I happened to notice
a thread on the ebuyer forum a couple of days ago about ebuyer shipping
seagate drives that were supposed to have a 5 year manufacturer's warranty
but only had one. I checked my serial number on the seagate web site and
sure enought I was told my drive only had a 1 year warranty.

Apparantly ebuyer are aware of the problem and are still advertising the
same product with a 5 year warranty but they have supposedly got different
OEM drives now with 5 year guarantees. Ebuyer have not contacted customers
to let them know and have kept quiet about the whole thing. A company rep in
the forums said that ebuyer will honour the 5 year warranty themselves but
they have not sent out correspondence confirming this.

The product description and codes on my drive all match what I was expecting
to receive according to the description on the ebuyer web site so what I
want to know is; is the OEM drive I have, mechanically identical to the OEM
one with a 5 year warranty that I was supposed to get? Is it made to the
same quality, with the same parts and will it operate at the same speed? Do
seagate sell the same drives but with different warranty lengths and no
other differences? The returns technician in the forums could not guarantee
that the drives were mechanically the identical which concerns me.

First questions will Ebuyer be around in 5 years?

As to the comparison on the HDD

Manufactures will sell hardware with lower prices if the buyer will assume
some or all of the warranty. It's a numbers game. Typically the products
are the same.

BUT manufactures have been known to pull the shorter warranty stock from the
bottom of the bell curve as their liability is less. Not saying this is
the case but it has been known to be the practice of some.

Last the vendor has shown a willingness to commit a sin of omissin what else
are the not saying?

I would insist on a return and refund or replacement with a
drive Seagate warrants. Even if Ebuyer has a realistic
expectation they would honor this term, they are not set up
like Seagate to have access to the drives or they could
conveniently lose any documentation of this claim or your
right to be covered under it.

IOW, no reason to trust them, product sold was not as
advertised and as such you are entitled to a refund.

The difference is Seagate sells them cheaper, due to lower
warranty costs and usually less packaging.

They're the same as the same model # (ST3320620AS) retail
version, that model # is always the same product (with minor
exception if they updated the firmware at some point in the
manufacturing process and applied to all drives produced
after that point in time). They "might" also reserve the
right to change some very minor things, discrete parts due
to supply channels and price fluctuations, but nothing that
should be significant to performance or general use.

The thread starts out with "bare OEM bulk"... these
usually do not have the same warranty with certain odd
exceptions (like Western Digital who actually has (or at
least had?) longer warranty on their OEM than retail
versions of same drive, though at some point I thought they
increased their retail version to a corresponding 3 year
warranty.
 
I had a similar problem with a couple of retail boxed 400GB SATA
drives that I purchased last year. The label on the box read
ST3400633AS, while the label on the drive read ST3400620AS, both
having the same serial number. When I entered the ST3400620AS model
number at the Seagate warranty site, it said component drive with no
warranty; when I entered the ST3400633AS model number, it said the
drive had a 5 year warranty. I contacted Seagate about this, they said
the discrepancy was due to some technical problem with the QIS
database. I just checked the warranty status to see if the problem
still exists, and it has been fixed. Now when I enter ST3400620AS
model number, the warranty information returns with ST3400633AS as the
model of the drive.

they say they will exchange the product but they will not pay for postage
costs which is contrary to the distance selling laws in the UK if a product
was mis described. I don't want to get into a legal battle over this; I
expect they know that most customer won't want to either so they play the
percentages and refuse to play ball, they can be out of pocket on the few
claims that go to court but still be up on the deal.

To the best of my knowledge, *all* Seagate OEM drives only have a 1 year
warranty. It's their boxed, retail drives that come with a 5 year warranty.

Therefore it's safe to assume that OEM = 1-year warranty with Seagates.

Ebuyer sell oem with 5 year warranties don't ask me how but they do.The
drives state OEMbut people have verified the guarantee period on seagates
web site.

all with five year limited warranty.

Hmm, odd. Next time I'm inside my machine I must take note of the serial
numbers (I assume that's what you need?) of the 3 Seagate OEM drives in
there and check them.
