There is freeware for different pda operating systems out there. This site
offers thousands of free ebooks that are reabable on the computer without
special software:

PDF file format tend to be standard in ebook publishing world.
You can write your book in latest OpenOffice suite and export to PDF
(build-in feature in OpenOffice).

I would have thought anyone flogging e-books would have give-away
e-readers (the Gillette principle :). However, there may well be
many free e-books that don't need a specific reader (after all, I
suspect the e-readers are built especially to preserve copyrite issues
and similar).

One place with a number of links to e-books (and I presume you want to
read books rather than just collect programs? ;-) is the Queensland
DPI e-Library at <http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/rerc/>.

You'll find a link to "Online books" in the list of contents on the
left hand side of the page. The blurb says:

On this page is our virtual reading room which includes access to
thousands of free fiction and non-fiction titles.
