Because of the warnings, I have been afraid to try the duplicate file function of EasyCleaner. Can anybody please give me some clear guidelines as to how to know which duplicate file listings to delete? Also, any advice on the criteria to use? Thanks in advance for any help!

Best philosophy to use = "if in doubt....... leave well alone"

I use it only to check for duplicates of mp3's (I get about 200 of those)
and pictures.

Anything else tends to be duplicate system files, and they are there for a
reason, so I leave well alone.

You have to know and identify every file on your system. ;-)
Every type is different.
Always make a backup when in doubt.
Duplicate dll's only need to be in the system directory. (99% rule)
Delete all others.
Run associated program.

There are many freeware dup finders. I use several.
EasyCleaner isn't one.
