Its a well known fact we deal with that virus scanning takes cpu power
away from other chores. In my case those chores are heavily graphics
oriented as a video editor. Video is probably about the heaviest
usage you can put your machine thru (as a daily routine).

But on the other hand virus protection is pretty much required these
days for an online machine.

I'd like to be able to turn my virus scanner off completely when I
want to. Some I've used do not really do that like AVG and quite a
few others I think.

Can someone point me at a virus scanner they have experience with that
they know can do that? There are too many out there to try until I
get lucky. I'm hoping someone can speak with experience about one
they use.

You should be able to disable any AV app when you want, but when you do I hope
you are not using an Always On connection unless you're disabling your
adapter/NIC as well. You could try Avast and stop the Resident scanner at any
time:

Your choice of course, but I think it's a mistake to do that. The risk of
forgetting to turn it back on again when necessary is too great. Although
virus checking uses CPU cycles, as does any other computer task, the better
products available don't use so much that it seriously impacts the
performance of the computer.

I use this product at home and the Corporate version at work
I see no noticeable difference in the speed of any of the PC's.

While I don't do video editing it's my understanding the best thing
for speeding up the process is loads of RAM.

I use Avast, and the only time I notice a slowdown is when it "phones home"
for an update, so you could turn that feature off, or reduce the frequency,
or do it manually so you're still protected.

HTH Tony.

If that slight slowdown bothers you, then reducing the frequency to once a
day wouldn't be terrible, but I would never turn off the automatic update
feature and do it manually. It's too easy to forget to do it.

Ken, you're right of course, but in the context of the OP I think it's a
valid point. I'm quite happy the way it is.

regards Tony.
