I have to resolve a problem that is causing Device Manager to show an
error code for Radeon x300 video card. The instructions are to remove
and reinstall using a dialog box. I don't have any software backup
for this. Will XP really uninstall and reinstall what I need for it
to work properly?

I don't need directions about how to do it, just assurance or
reassurannce that this is really the right thing to do.

TIA

Was the machine working Ok prior to this error ?.
Or have you introduced it by making changes ?.

As long as the existing drivers are not corrupted this will work fine.
If you are concerned they might be bad, then go here and download new
drivers first.

I noticed a problem when Firefox locked up one day. I'd clicked on a
video (not YouTube) and kaboom, FF was completely locked up. I have
it set to accept all cookies and dump them when I close. No amount of
closing and reopening fixed FF.... I knew I didn't have a virus, so I
ran AdAware which removed various tracking cookies and other things,
one of which was a "medium" threat. After that FF worked just fine.
I went into device manager to poke around and noticed that the video
card had a warning sign next to it.

I think most of those cookies came from IE... I just looked and it was
set to accept 3rd party cookies which are blocked now.

Anyway, I uninstalled the video card but now the Add Hardware wizard
says it can't find the necessary software to reinstall. I'm feeling
like I've bitten off more than I can chew.

I think Adam has given you the answer. Go to the ATI site,
and d\load the drivers\software for your card.
Then keep the package safe <g>.

Go to www.ati.com to download the driver you need. These days you can find
manuals and drivers for everything online at the mfg'rs website.

Thanks, that's done. In the mean time I discovered that the wrong OS
was installed on my replacement HD last summer. Dayum! I'd just
gotten this computer running the way I like it (with all the software
I like installed and tweaked). Now I have to install a new OS, which
(correct me if I'm wrong) overwrites everything and I'm starting from
scratch again. Is that right? Do you have any suggestions about how
to transfer software such as Agent over to a new OS with current
settings in place?

TIA
