Dr Teeth

I have this sporadic problem, the last time was 3 months ago.
Suddenly, only certain PCs can only 'see' other PCs.

Two of my three PCs multi-boot. XP is always the affected PC.

The last time it happened I managed to fix things. I spent literally
hours, using Chuck's excellent site, on the issue. I was not sure as
to what actually provided the fix.

Same thing happened yesterday. I remembered that the last thing I did
was to use a TCP/IP repair tool. So, I tried it first this time.
Problem fixed in 10 seconds.

I hope this helps somebody else out there.

I was just thinking how wonderful life was, when "Gwen Zierdt"
Trouble
shooting problems shouldn't be so difficult or take so long.

You'll notice that this time it took seconds! I agree that they
shouldn't take long...but they sometimes do.

Us mere mortals need the help of those who work with networks (and
breathe them) for a living.

For experts it's easy...not everybody is.

Guy,

LSP / Winsock corruption is a frequent cause of network problems, and the
symptoms can be very scattered and inconsistent. And none of the several tools
will each, by itself, fix all problems. And this problem continues today, even
in Windows Vista. Thanks for reminding us.

Hi Chuck,

I hope you are well and had a good Thanksgiving.

The tool that I found (XP TCP/IP Repair) warns that using this tool
should be a last resort...not anymore here <g>.

As you mentioned that the problem still exists in Vista, is there a
separate tool or command line that you can point me in the direction
of for that OS?

Hi Guy,

I asked that question of a Microsoft expert, and he told me that the netsh
command, slightly modified from Windows XP, should be
"netsh winsock reset".

As of now, I havn't found any third party tools. Maybe Microsoft expanded the
scope of the netsh command, so no third party tools are required. We will see.

And there's no TechNet documentation available yet.
