I have a DV tape with four different videos on it. I captured the first one with
Movie Maker, did some editing, and saved the final product in two formats, one
as high quality video (NTSC)which produced a .wmv and a second as DV-AVI which
produced a .avi. Did the same thing with the second file which worked as well.
On the third video on the tape, I got as far as producing the .wmv file, but
cannot produce the .avi file. When I try, the screen shows the "Save Movie
Wizard", acts as though the translation and saving is going along OK, until it
reaches 99% at which point it just continues ad infinitum and the computer will
not respond to stop the action.

In summary, three files all on the same tape, shot with the same camera, and two
work well all the way through a WMM session while the third fails to complete.
I've yet to find a similar case on any of the usual URLs. Anyone with a suggestion?

hmmm, this ones perplexing...

Did you do anything differently with the third video? As in is it longer
than the other 2 or did you split it more times and add more transitions?
Another question is now that you saved 2 DV-AVI files and 2 high quality WMV
files do you still have hard drive space?

Not that I'm aware of

First .wmv is 31,048 KB, second is 129,951 KB, and third is 59,693 KB. Each of
the three have a Title page and no more than twelve transitions.

I run Diskeeper after each video is recorded and then view it to be sure it's
OK. There is approx 26 GB free space on a remote HD partition which is
dedicated to saving all video files I make until I burn DVDs.

While we're here, how do I get WMP to view the DV-AVIs produced by WMM? I have
to use Quicktime for them even though the .wmvs play fine on WMP. Seems strange
that the two MS programs are incompatible.

TIA for any help.

I can't imagine why you can't view the DV-AVI files in Media Player but the
fact that you can't points towards
you having a codec problem of some sort.
You can download the Windows XP Codec pack here:
http://www.free-codecs.com/
Also have a look at Papajohn's website for a list of codecs that are known
to cause problems in Movie Maker.

I thought maybe I couldn't view the AVIs because they were on a remote hd
attached via USB. I copied them to the C: drive, and when I tried again to view
them, I get a static picture of the 1st frame of the video. They'll play fine
in Quicktime though.

When it comes to codecs, where should the files be stored in order to make them
available to WMP and WMM? I have a whole slew [over 90] of them in,
C:\WINDOWS\system32, also stored in C:\Program Files\Intervideo\WCreator, still
more in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache, and also on various other Program Files
including Common Files, Cyberlink, Intervideo and NVIDIA. Sould I delete
some/all of them and start over, or what? In DivX there are more

I know that it's hard to converse through a newsgroup, but this thing really has
me floored. I've been able to resolve lots of problems on this PC (ACER, XPHome
SP@, all updates, 512 RAM, three hds, LCD monitor) and have made and burned
other videos on this same machine using WMM tp capture and edit andUlead DVD
Workshop2 to author and burn.

I can be reached easily at (e-mail address removed) if the edy is removed.

I appreciate all the help you've offered here.

I am not sure how much more I can advise you here.
I can tell you that it seems that anytime I run across a system with that
many codec's
installed there's usually problems due to conflicting codecs.
I think Papajohn is much more of an authority when it comes to this one than
I am so
hopefully he can advise more on the issue.

Problem seems to be with WMM and its form of AVI. I can capture some of the
previously used DV tapes using Ulead and the resulting AVI file plays fine in
WMP, as do other AVIs scattered around in various places on my hard drives. I
guess I'll just have to wait for a new down loadable WMM and use other programs
in the meantime. Too bad, because WMM is SOOOO easy to use.
