Earthlink uninstall in windows xp

When I perform an uninstall on Earthlink software via control panel "Add &
Remove Programs" and after a reboot I cannot connect to the internet. I have
to perform a restore to a point prior to the uninstall in order to
reestablish an internet connection.

Check the settings on your LAN/dial-up connection after uninstalling. The
Earthlink software may have changed some settings to be compatible with its
features. Contact Earthlink help pages/support resources if that does not
work.
 
I spent 90 minutes on the phone with Earthlink support , they tried to have
me delete the softeare from the folder listings in explorer. Windows would
not delete the software. I kept getting a message that windows could not
continue due to a file that was being used. Earthlink was not running.
Earthlink Support gave up and told me someone would call me back, which of
course did not happen.

Try booting in Safe Mode to delete folders/files that are in use.
