Earthlink Popup Stopper Horror

Just made an error two days ago which I regret when the earthlink
popup stopper was offered as being tailored for dsl. Before
Installing it, Shields Up reported me as invulnerable with no
information able to be accessed.

After installing this monster I now get an identification back with
personal information regarding my dsl connection. I have tried ever
way possible to undo this including several trys at using mcafee
uninstaller and several checkpoint restores since I have XP. No
success, it still reports the connection.

If anyone has experience with this thing I would sure like to get rid
of it without having to do a complete backup, format and restore of my
computer. Far as I know I have nothing of interest to anyone on it,
but I certainly don't want unauthorized access to it either.

It is possible that Spint DSL, my isp, or Shields Up may have changed
something, but I have no evidence of that.

I don't have enough expertise to join the forum, but felt that I
should pass on this horror story.

I'm not sure this is referencing the same program about which you speak,
but PopUp Stopper from Panicware is an excellent program. To allow a popup
all you need do is to press and hold down the Ctrl key and click on your
site/program again. With PopUp Stopper, by default all are stopped, but you
can easily allow any that you want to POP UP. And once you press Ctrl it
allows PopUps for that site/program without you having to press Ctrl again.
If you are speaking of a different program (e.g., a different pop up stopper
program), then disregard these comments since they apply to the best PopUp
Stopper program there is.

Which ports are shown as open?

Were you using a router?

Do you have File and Printer Sharing enabled?

I don't use XP, but I believe you have the "System Restore" feature
with that OS version. You might try going back to a time predating
installation of the Earthlink program.

Good of you to admit (albeit in a broken sig) that your perception is so
badly flawed; it explains a lot.
