When attempting to install an update to my Earthlink Total Access 2005
application (Earthlink MuniWifi Update) Defender stops the install and
reports that some adware (HotBar) is trying to be installed. Is this for real
or a false positive?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1904.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1941.7
Product ID: 81664-347-9912626-04807

An addendum: I contacted Earthlink Support and they say "No HotBar, no adware
in the update file, it's a connection stability improvement update".

Hello WiFi Ed,

It's better to be safe than sorry!

Download CCleaner, and remove all temporarily junk.
Also clean registry with "Issues".

Download/Install Lavasofts Adaware
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022-10399602.html?tag=list

After install, upgrade Adaware definitions with "Check for updates".

Restart in safe mode, press F8 during reboot just before Windows flag screen
appears.

Scan with Ccleaner, MSWD and Lavasoft Adaware, choose "full scªns".

If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-ons, and uncheck any
BHO's that you don't recºgnize.

Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

There are 3 builds available.

1.Standard Build also includes the Yahoo Toolbar but that can be
UNcheckmarked during the installation if you so desire.

2.Basic does NOT include the Toolbar

3.Slim also does NOT include the Toolbar and is English only.

Note, When you install Ccleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.

Note, in Options, Advanced, uncheck - Only delete files in Windows folders
older than 48 hours.

Note: uncheck in Applications, the box for Utilities.

Do a scan with all the check marks on.

Open Ccleaner and press "Windows" "Aplications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund.

Run twice Ccleaner, the same as above, until you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.

Then try Ewido (now known as AVG Anti-Spyware) for removal:

A complete scan of my system per your instructions shows that it is clean, no
HotBar, viruses, etc. were found. Perhaps the good folks at Microsoft might
talk to the Earthlink folks and see why the Earthlink MuniWifi update is
reported by Defender as trying to install HotBar.

I like the protection provided by Defender and will continue to use it.

Thanks for the assistance!
