has anyone been able to use msmail with earthlink as the primary mail
provider?

If you mean Windows Mail, there's no reason why it wouldn't
work with EarthLink, providing the account is POP or IMAP.

Yes but I wouldn't use the software they provide since it's useless and I've
been with Mindspring/Earthlink since '95 or '96.

All the software you need to connect is already in Windows.

The answer to the op's question, 'has anyone been able etc.."

Yes. Elink Pop3 works fine with Windows Mail and accessed from cable or the backup dial up connection.

Well, do you not see a "Yes" that was the first word of my answer?

I contacted Earthlink and was told that Earthlink Mail is not compatible with
VISTA yet and that I needed to us MSMail. I am having the dialup connection
problem that I have been reading about and have tried practically all of the
solutions to no avail. Will now try to uninstall dial-up.
