I hooked hearphones to the back of my HP Pavillion 7966, and I hear what is
said well with the hearphones but what is said is also being heard aloud
from the speakers at the same time. I don't know what to do so the speakers
are not heard when I use the earphones, any advise of what I need to do?
Thanks in advance.

You might turn down the speaker volume control - if there is one.
Or purchase an A/B switch that would allow you to toggle between the two.

You probably plugged the headphones into the rear channel speaker output, so
that both the speakers and headphones are in use. To quiet the speakers you
either have to pull the plug and put the headphones in that plug, or get a
speaker/headphone switch (available at Radio Shanty, computer/office supply
stores , Cyberguys.com, etc)

Double check if there is a headphone jack on the front of the PC, that will
silence the speakers, or a jack in the speakers themselves.

When in doubt, RTFM.

I checked and there seems no to be any jack in the front, and neither at the
speakers.
I was thinking that a sophisticated program like Window XP or a computer
like the Pavillion 7966 can swith between the two (between the speakers and
the headphones) by means of a setting (super secret variable) already there
somewhere or a switch already there somewhere. Well, I am surprised that
apparently it is something that I will have to buy separately.
Thanks, everybody.
