Earlier version of VueScan wanted

I wonder if someone can point me to an earlier version of Vuescan .18 or .17

I am using 8.1.19 on my 4870 but I keep getting lockups when batch scanning.
Some times it is during the first frame and sometimes the 20th or any other
random number. The screen and everything else just freezes and I need to
reboot.

Everything has been going swell for months as I have been scanning mega negs
for months. I grabbed 8.1.19 on 27th and have had problems. They have
continued after a XP2 upgrade yesterday and a BIOS upgrade to the latest.
It may coincide with a new USB peripheral "Disk Stakka" being attached -
Xmas gift (I have detached it for the time being as I eliminate all
possibilities). It draws 500mA and although the USB on the computer is
meant to supply that I will get a powered hub.
Anyway even with this thing detached I still am getting lockups

I usually have about 2 or 3 earlier versions but deleted them prior to XP2
upgrade when i backed up my C drive.

Thanks

Try deleting all copies of the vuescan.ini file and restarting the
program. Also check the amount of RAM being reserved by Vuescan. If
you do a lot of scans at one time you may need to increase this.

Have you ever thought of burning those downloaded programs to a CDR when you
first download the new programs. Especially a program you pay for.

That way you would keep copies of every file and program that you have
downloaded, whether you use the program or not.

CDRs are very cheap these days. Even if the CDR is burned in sessions, you
would not be wasting much space on the CDR.

Maybe you can email Ed with a helpful error report he will give you access
to an older version in exchange :)

I wonder if someone can point me to an earlier version of Vuescan...

Sorry I can't help. My scanning is done on Macs, not PCs.

But in case Ed Hamrick is still skimming this group from time to time, your
request brings up a good point. It would be nice if Ed's site kept an archive
of older versions available for download. Some companies provide older
versions, so why not make older versions of VueScan available?

You, I, and others have experienced the need to revert to an older version, for
one reason or another. In case Ed doesn't see this suggestion, it might be
worth e-mailing this suggestion to him directly.

Good luck. ...pt

Thanks for the advice.

I had tried deleting vuescan.ini. I always use a custom profile which I load
and save

I rebuilt that from scratch after the probs started

I will try the RAM advice although I have been doing this level of scanning
(36 at once) for 9 months with no probs. I have a gig of RAM P4

I emailed him with details- no reply yet- but when I atempted to follow the
instructions on the website the vuescan.log comes in at 5meg zipped. He can
only accept 2meg files.

My earlier attempt at this post crashed while using 8.1.19

I am using .14 at present and no problems -fingers crossed. (found it buried
in my non system HD - I should have looked harder before posting)

Thanks to those who also offered .16 and .18 as I would like try them as
well

Gus,

I have a similar problem, having overwritten the install file for 8.1.16,
and having artifact troubles with .17 through .19.
I have corresponded with Ed and, at his request, sent some sample files. I
asked for a link to the older version, but no reply on that. I would very
much appreciate getting .16.

thanks,

Thanks to all who supplied an earlier version

It seems its not VueScan but either the scanner or PC as the same problem
arises with the Epson software as well especially on batch scanning.

I can single scan but if I do batch with VueScan or EpsonScan I get computer
freeze either partway through the first scan or randomly through a larger
number.

I started to have problems just before I upgraded to SP2 so have discounted
that.

I looked at my USB load 7 internal connections but with with only a R800,
4870 plus USB wireless keyboard its not great. I had attached a Imation Disk
Stakka (500mA) but the scanner worked if I remember. Even with the Disk
Stakka removed I still get the freeze.

So it points to the scanner.

I have batch scanned thousands of negs over the last 6 months with the
scanner using Vuescan with no problem.

Will continue to diagnose.
