MRSA is becoming more and more of a problem in hospitals than ever before. One of the main problems involved in tracking down the super-bug is that it normally takes three days to process cultures in a laboratory. Scientists have been working on a new device which can detect the presence of MRSA more quickly and efficiently - an electronic nose. This piece of kit could reduce test-time to as little as fifteen minutes.
At £60,000 it doesn't come cheap, and it is fairly large as well (about the size of two PCs). However, this could be a small price to pay to hopefully bring a halt to one of the biggest problems facing hospitals in recent years.
