e-mial web page problem

I have the following problem: in IE6 when trying to send a page by e-mail
going through File, Send, Page by E-mail…, I get a popup window saying: “The
current document type can not be sent as mail. Would you like to send a
Shortcut instead?†with two available options: “Yes†and “Noâ€. If I click on
Yes Outlook Express opens and sends the link of the web page. The rest of the
Send submenu options work OK. When right clicking an image in an open web
site and selecting “E-mail picture…†from the context menu, the same window
pops up. This happens every time and on every web site I am browsing, unlike
my other computer which has similar configuration, absolutely the same
applications installed, and feeds web pages and images to OE without a
problem. So far I tried scanning my hard disk for corrupted files and bad
sectors, system restore, checking and restoring my system files with sfc, and
finally reinstalling IE6 and OE. The behavior does not change if I select a
different e-mail client for IE. I am using Windows XP with SP2 and all
current patches. The only web browser on my system is IE. On the same
computer I do not have a problem e-mailing a picture from a folder by right
clicking on it, and selecting “Send To†and “Mail Recipient†from the context
menu.

Any suggestions?

See if disabling your anti-virus application and/or third-party firewall
makes any difference, George. Be careful!

It did not. I am using Norton antivirus and the XP firewall. disabling them
did not make a difference.
Thanks for helping PA Bear!

Your current OE Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try the action in a new Named Identity (File>Identities>Add new
identity; Also make the new identity the default via File>Identities>Manage
identities). Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity
before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

George,

You can use JumpKnowledge, a free service, located at

www.jkn.com

to email any web page. jkn is the world's first-and-only "web-based"
web page emailer that is much more versatile then IE/Outlook "File,
Send, Page by E-mail..." For example, jkn supports framesets and is
smart enough to link to images instead of embedding them.

Thank you very much for your help, PA Bear! Creating a new identity and
switching identities fixed the problem. Apparently my main identity file is
corrupt. How do I get rid of the corrupted main identity? What is the file's
name and can I physically delete it?

1. Make sure you've imported messages from the old identity (if you want
them) into the new identity before deleting the old one.

2. Make a note of Main Identity's location (Tools > Options > Maintenance >
Store folder).

3a. File > Identities > Manage identities > Select 'Main Identity' > press
Remove;

3b. Close OE & reboot;

3c. Confirm that OE opens to the new identity.

4. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the location you wrote down in #2 above.
If the store folder persists, Delete it.

George, please post future OE questions to one of these OE-specific
newsgroups for faster assistance:
