I have Microsoft Word 2007 and have emailed a file as an attachment to a
friend. He has the old version of Word. It comes to him as a zip file and
then when he opens it, an online gaming service (Maybe Bango?) comes on. I
had him email is it back to me and all that was there was the Word file.
This has happened on more than one computer and both computers are SUPER
SECURE, with at least 3 Spyware programs ran once a week, one anti-virus
progam ran once a week, and a firewall set at stealth. Both PCs show clean.
Now when I take word file and save it in compatability mode for the older
version of office and send it; it arrives fine. No zip file and just the
word file. So I can cure the problem by saving the file in the older mode,
but what is causing this in the Office 2007 and why does it not happen to
either of my computers when I receive files in 2007 Word mode.

Earlier versions of Word cannot read files saved in Word 2007's default
format. First (in Word) do a Save As and choose Word 97-2003 Document.

Where did the ZIP with the games come from? And is there anything wrong
with my PC or the person I sent it to?

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
