Probably got your outgoing (SMTP) server and/or your account details wrong.
Your first port of call should be your ISP's help pages.

Hi -

When you post in here, always include your version, SP level, and mode (if
applicable) of Outlook - you can find this information in Help | About. Also
include the type of mail account(s) you use and any other pertinent details.

Be sure to put a consise summary of your question in the subject line, and
the full details in the body of your post.

why on earth would you say something like that rather than trying to
communicate with them on their level and being helpful? - just like the
email above.

Hmmm. I looked for your own reply to the original poster, but you must have
typed it in invisible ink for increased security.
Next time I'll be sure to run my replies by you for approval/rejection
before submitting them to the group.

It appeared that you had already covered all the bases with your helpful and
supportive answer....

there was nothing left to say but comment on your thoroughness.
