Since approx 9/01/05, I am running Windows XP SP2 home, with Outlook for
e-mail and since approx 10/01/05 I am running McAfee anti virus.

Some of my efforts to e-mail result in the following notice from McAfee anti
virus:

Protocol Error

VBScript: McAfee VirusScan

Command sent was: RCPT TO: ([email protected])

Response received is: 501 This system is not configured to relay mail from
([email protected]) to ([email protected]) for
0-2pool101-231.nas16.chicago4.il.usa.da.qwest.net

Consult the online help for your e-mail program for more information on this
error. Contact your e-mail provider if the problem persists.

Hi,

Usually, that's unrelated to the AV software, but rather you need to enable
server authentication. In Outlook, this is found in the properties of the
mail account.

I can't tell from the error messages if the problem is with the email scan
portion of McAfee or with the configuration of your email account.

Most likely, you have multiple email accounts and have completed the
configuration for incoming mail but have not completed it for outgoing. The
error messages appear to indicate that you're logged on to an email server
with one account while trying to send mail from another account. This is
blocked by most ISPs to avoid spammers relaying bulk mailings off of their
servers. To adjust this:

In Outlook, click on Tools> Email Accounts. Select to "view or change" an
existing account. On the next screen, select the email account in question.
Then click Change. On this next screen, click the More Settings button. And
finally on the next screen, click the Outgoing Server tab.

In most cases, all that is needed is to check the box next to "outgoing
server requires authentication" and place a tick next to "use same settings
as incoming mail server."

If you have multiple email accounts, you'll need to repeat these steps for
each one. If this does not work, check with your various email providers to
find out what they require for "outgoing" credentials.

Turn off email scanning. It provides no added protection and interferes
with email operations.
