Install Works or Microsoft Word.

You can try these fixes too (Google - it really works - try it.)

This information applies to Microsoft Outlook Express:

Yes, that message is correct. But here is a workaround:

The previous information applies only if you're using Microsoft Outlook
Express. For web-based spell checkers, read below: (Note that I've not tried
any, so far)

The message seems pretty clear. Do you have either Microsoft
Works Suite or Microsoft Office installed?

You haven't said, but I presume that you're using Outlook Express
as a mail client? Outlook Express, as you've discovered, has no
spell-checking capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the
presence of other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite,
Word, or the Works _Suite_ (which includes Word, not the regular
Works). There are also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware solutions
available at any of the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

Hi Bruce,
I'm new to this forum and after reading your advise I think you may be able
to help me. I'm an amateur and was trying to help out a friend with her
computer. I checked that I wanted all her emails to be sent thru spell check
and boy are they. I checked her AOL and that one is turned off. My
question, how do I turn off the one on her computer. To turn it on I was on a
page that had several options available as basic settings and you just had to
click on the ones you wanted.

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever come with a
Spell Checking facility. Outlook Express uses the spell checker that comes
with Microsoft Word, (or another Microsoft Office program) if you have it
installed.

If you don't have Word or Office installed, you probably don't have a spell
checker. However there are several downloadable freeware/shareware
alternative spell checkers that work with Outlook Express and Outlook. Since
I have no personal experience with any of these, I'll let someone else
recommend one.

On the other hand, if a Microsoft Office component *is* installed, try the
instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm

Since WinXP is an operating system it naturally has no
spell-checking capability.
