E-mail server

I am currently using a web-based e-mail system. I am running out of
storage space for my account and don't want to permanently delete any
of the e-mails at this time. POP3 is also supported by my provider.

What I would like is suggestions for a e-mail client that can also act
like a server. I don't want to finalize a decision on a POP3 client
just yet. I figured if I could use a client for now that could also
act as a simple server, I could use it for now and then when I make a
final decsion on a client I could retrieve the old message from the
local server.

I know I could use some of the major clients now and that other very
popular clients might be able to import e-mail files. I don't know
that I'm going to settle for one of the major e-mail clients though
and would prefer not to mess with importing/exporting messages anyway.

It would actualy probably be simpler to say that I am looking for a
POP3 server that can download e-mail from my ISP. I guess there
doesn't have to be any real interface for reading/posting as I could
connect another client to it for that purpose. The simpler the
better.

You might take a look at Argosoft's freeware version. Note that the web
interface does display ads.

I'll put a qualified vote in for 602 Software's LAN Suite
(http://www.software602.com/products/ls/).

It is free for 5 or fewer accounts (that means you) and is as easy as
(whatever is easy) to deploy. You set up your accounts then to access
your POP3 server and bring the mail files locally. This is only a
server, so the client part it still up to you. But it does offer a web
front-end.

Obviously installed it and did some testing, haven't set it up in
production. Hence the qualified endorsement.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I think I'll try the ArgoSoft
one first as I've used their FTP server before and liked it for its
small size and simplicity. I'll try the others if it doesn't apper to
work as I want.

Thanks again.

I haven't been following this thread completely and don't know if it's
already been listed, but Pablo van der Meer has a small POP3 server on his
site. You can hook the popular "webby" web interface to it. You would need
an SMTP server or send out through your ISP which is where most ISP's are
headed these days.

Perhaps I missed it somewhere, but I couldn't find anything that
indicated that I could first download my mail from my ISP to this
ArgoSoft server?

It's an email server. Do you want a server or a collector?

Both. As I said in the original message "I am looking for a
POP3 server that can download e-mail from my ISP". This way I can
get around the size restriction on my ISP provided mailbox, and I can
access the local server with any client.

I've been using the web-based interface my ISP provides so I haven't
been using a traditional e-mail client. If I had an e-mail client
that I really liked and would stick with, it'd be easy. I'd just
download all the messages into the e-mail client and be all set. At
this time though I don't want to commit to any particular e-mail
client.

Looks like the 602 Lan Suite that Bill suggested has the option to do
what I want if I can get it working.

Thanks

Size restriction on total mailbox size or individual message size? Some
servers handle these differently and to different degrees. If it's a per
message size limit and you can't get around it by splitting the post into
acceptable size chunks that's one thing. If it's a matter of the files you
want to xfer being larger than allowed mailbox size that's a different
matter. If you're talking about handling large files on a regular basis
have you considered a small ftp server such as that from Pablo van der Meer?

Restriction on total mailbox capacity. I am alotted 25 megabytes and
have used up more than 23.

I want to clear out my ISP mailbox but I don't want to lose those
messages so I just want to essentially relocate the messages from my
ISP to a locally running mailserver. That is why the local server to
be used also needs to retrieve e-mail also.

Maybe the freeware version of Ability Email server will do what you want.
