e-mail in a visual basic .net application

does anyone know how to go about implementin an e-mail
function directly from a vb . net application...
I am a university student and this topic is giving me grey
hair!
 
Hi Sohail, you need to check out the System.Web.Mail namespace, add a
refence to System.Web in your project, then you can send email (as long as
your running 2000/2003/XP and have IIS installed).

I don't believe the SMTP service is tied to IIS is it? You can install
either or both, from my little experience of messing about on XP Pro anyway.

XP Home doesn't have it by the way Sohail, though I'm sure it can be
"bodgestalled".

Strange how I managed to have IIS installed but not the SMTP service then?
hmm... weird. Also you need the CDO message objects provided with either
Outlook or Windows Server I believe. I cant use the Mail namespace on XP
Pro until I install Outlook again with the CDO objects.

Also since been *fixed" my Microsoft, I can't on my version of XP Home, one
of the service packs *may* have fixed it, either that or my OEM version is
screwed up!

Well, you do have to select it when you are installing IIS, in the Details
section. The SMTP server isn't necessary, you don't need the SMTP server at
all. I haven't got Outlook installed, but installing the SMTP server gives
me the CDO objects.

posh name for Personal Web Server. I stand corrected.

saying that the article that Microsoft previously had on their site
explaining how to get IIS to work on XP Home doesn't work for me, I believe
this may have been *fixed* so that it doesn't work on a more permanent
basis.
