e-mail hyperlink in Word opens over 50 IE windows

When clicking on an e-mail hyperlink in word (I believe it's word 2003), over
50 IE (6,0 – I believe) browser windows opens rather than opening a single
e-mail window. This only occurs with e-mail hyperlinks. Web hyperlinks open a
single IE browser and links to the correct address. I can also see this very
same problem written by "ob" on 7/25/06 titled “Email hyperlink opens dozens
of IE windows." His problem showed up when clicking on an e-mail hyperlink on
a webpage. Exact same problem I'm seeing when clicking on an e-mail hyperlink
from Word.

I had placed this question under Office “general questions†and was told to
post it under IE.

Hope someone can come with a solution.
Cheers,
M-T
PS: Yes, I have run a virus check. Everything has been updated, that is to
say, Windows, Explorer, Office, and Norton Security.

Okay, I can see that this is getting closer to the problem. Unfortunately, it
didn't quite solve the problem.
1) I was not able to choose anything from the E-mail dropdown list under
IE/tools/Internet Options. It was simply empty. So I went to the "manual
solution"
2) to my surprise there was no "mailto" under "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT", so I
added that and then added a new String value named URL Protocol.

That resulted in a window opening the Installations guide for Microsoft
Exchange, which the person whose computer I'm working on does not have.

I went home to my own computer and saw that I had a few other folders under
my "mailto" folder which are
DefaultIcon with a String Value named "default" with the following value
"C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE",7â€
shell/open/command with a String Value named "default" with the following
value "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"
Directly under HKey_CLASSES_ROOT/mailto is a
"default" String Value with the following value "URL:MailTo-protokol"
reg_Binary called EditFlags
URL Protocol string value with no data under "data value"

My friend uses Outlook Express as opposed to Outlook. Should she also have
some of the same things in her Registry as I have (I would of course direct
the path toward her outlook express) - how does the configuraiton differ for
Outlook Express as opposed to Outlook?

Please excuse any expressions that I mght have used incorrectly. I don't
know all the names in English (am not sure if "default" is a String Value) I
just hope you understnad what I've written and can guide me a little further
on.

I feel I am getting closer to the root of the problem - I just need a little
more help. Thank you,
MTL

Hi Remish
I will look into that the next time I work on her computer. There is,
however, a little catrch - she has Outlook Express (and not Outlook) - would
I use the same variables with Outlook Express as I would with Outlook? That
is to say, should I include for example "-c IPM.Note /m %1" after the path

Hi MTL,

Nope. The Path, Executable name, and the parameters are completely
different. If you check the link I provided earlier, you'll know the exact
exe name and the command-line parameters. More over, this is fixable using
the GUI (Folder Options applet, File Types tab)

Finally something worked!! I followed the instructions in your first link
Once that was done, I was finally able to go into Outlook Express and this
time the program allowed me to make it its "default mail handler"
(Tools/options/"General" tab/"make default" under the section dealing with
making the application the default mail handler). I had previously attempted
to do that, but it was as if Outlook Express would simply not accept it. Once
I ran that line described in the above link, it was no longer a problem.
