Received note from Microsoft addressed to MS Partner. It
stated it was the latest version of security
update, "September 2003 - cumulative patch. It looked
fishy. Is it OK to install?

NO!

Microsoft NEVER sends patches via email. It is a virus. Do not run it

I joined the 'Communities' from the MS homepage and soon after I started
receiving virus infected e-mails. I know I should have used a fake address
but you'd think MS site would have been a bit safer.

Hi,

This is Usenet, not Microsoft's own communities. They have newsgroups that
get replicated on many different news servers. A bot can then go and pick
them up (not necessarily from Microsoft's groups on Microsoft's server, but
from microsoft.public groups on many other servers that just mirror the
posts) then they email the posters.

The reason they pick these groups is a simple one - people looking for
technical support on Microsoft products are more likely to run a "patch from
Microsoft" then most other groups.
