E-Machine restore problem

Computer boots to a boot menu (safe mode, normal, etc.). No matter
which one is selected it huffs and puffs and returns to the same boot
menu.

I ran the restore CDs that came with the computer and it still boots
to the boot menu.

I called E-machine support. They said the computer was out of warranty
and were not too helpful. She suggested that perhaps the CDs were
corrupt and I could order replacements for $20. That is possible but
not likely. It is not my computer and I am hesitant to ask the owner
to put up $20 and then find it still boots to the boot menu.

OS is XP Home, CPU is 2.8 GHz

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

TIA

Copy the restore cds to another blank cds.

Use the copied cd to restore the emachine.

That version of ghost if it detects one little tiny error, it won't
restore right.

,;Try booting into Recovery Console http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654 and
,;use the following command:
,;
,;fixmbr
,;fixboot c:
,;
,;Then if Windows still can't boot, try the Restore CD again.

From your suggested URL... How to install and use the Recovery Console
in Windows XP

To install the Recovery Console, you must be logged on as an
administrator.

Obviously I can't log in as an administrator since I never get to
windows.

The computer boots to the boot option menu. It returns to that menu
no matter which option you pick.

Hey,

You can also run the recovery console without installing it. Sorry I didn't
know that the MSKB didn't include this in it.

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows
XP CD-ROM, use the following steps:

1.. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or
insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the
computer.

2.. Click to select any options that are required to start the computer
from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.

3.. When you're prompted to press F6 for mass storage devices - press F10
instead. This will automatically start the Recovery Console.

4.. Alternatively, when the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to
start the Recovery Console.

5.. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, choose the
installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.

6.. When you are prompted to do so, type the Administrator password. If
the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

7.. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and
repair your Windows XP installation.

I have restored my E-Machine T1105 a couple of times. Let's see if I can
help.

1. Can you get into the CMOS setup and see the Boot Priority? Can you set
the CD to highest priority?
2. Can you boot the machine from the Restore CD? You should be able to. If
it boots from the CD OK,
then there may be something wrong with the hard drive. That could be a
"physical problem" or simply some file destroyed in WINDOWS.

My Restore CD effectively deletes everything from the disk, does a high
level format, and installs the software that came on the hard drive
originally.

The copy I have of the restore disks cannot be used to "Repair" the MBR that
was suggested by another response. (This is unfortunate, but that was the
way the OEM did it.)

The Windows XP SP2 diskette can be ordered from Microsoft to prevent
downloading all the patches and updates.
