I have Windows XP home edition.A notice repeatedly
appears on screen;
"The proceedure entry point WSCUpdateProvider could not
be located in the dynamic link library Ws2-32.dll."
What does this indicate and what action if any is
required? I just turn the notice off and seem to be able
to perform all computer functions without difficulty.

Hi, John -

The error you mention means that some program is trying
to access a function that ws2_32.dll doesn't support -
there are three possible causes:

1. You've installed an application that was designed to
run on an earlier version of Windows. I'd contact the
application vendor for an updated copy. I'm afraid I
can't tell you which application it is but I can tell you
that the application tries to access the Internet. I
know that's not a lot of help but it's about as far as I
can narrow it down.

2. The original ws2_32.dll on your machine has been
replaced by an older version. With system file
protection this is kinda unlikely, though.

3. The original ws2_32.dll is present and in the proper
location but there's another copy being called from
another location.

There should only be two copies of this file on your
machine - one in c:\windows\system32 and one in
c:\windows\system32\dllcache - and the most recent
version of the file is dated 8/18/2001. The versions in
system32 and dllcache should be identical. I'd search
for the file in other locations.
