Dynamic DNS not updating on 2003 servers

We have an AD environment with the DCs running on Windows
2003 servers. We do not use MS DNS but have DNS running
on LINUX environment from years past. We allow dyanmic
updates to DNS from only the AD domain controllers and
until recently it seems to have been working. Up till now
all the servers in our domain have been Windows 2000 and
recently have added some Windows 2003 servers. These
servers are not getting their entries updated in the DNS
as in the past. They seem to be trying to register
themselves to DNS which we do not allow. We only allow
the domain controllers access to update the DNS when it
knows about a server and with W2k it was working.

Do we have something wrong and can this situation be
corrected?

Thanks,
Greg

In the server's NIC properties, do you registration disabled?

I checked the box to register DNS and the event log
reports an error trying to update the DNS server, which
by our setup it cannot, but should get registered by the
domain controllers which can update our DNS. Since then I
have also unchecked the box with no change. We have not
had this issue with our W2K servers, only the newer W2k3
servers.

I'm not sure how this would have been working in the past as each machine is
responsible for registering its own records assuming DHCP isn't involved
(which is another issue). This is not new to Windows Server 2003. If DC's
are the only machines allowed to register in DNS then what you're describing
would be expected behavior.

Mr Hornbeck pretty much explained it. If you have the checkbox allowing
registration (default) then it will register. If DHCP, then it will
register. If you uncheck the box and the server is not a DC or DNS server,
then it shouldn't register.
