Dynamic columns with

I want to ask if this is sensible to create an Access report in tabular
format with 'dynamic' columns width but in fixed font size. In other words,
columns are auto-sized by the time the reports are generated, like the
auto-width column function in Excel. I know Access can autosize the fonts
but not for the columns width. Also, the report has to be automatically
resized to fit printing on a A4 paper.

(Actually, that is what my boss wants.)

If fitting to one page or something similar is a requirement, then I would
suggest pushing the data to Excel and let your boss do whatever she wants
for formatting.

Yes, I agree with you.

However, my application is in web-based with plain ASP & JScript coding. I
have to display the report through IE browser. The fact is, my boss very
insists on using the browser for everything. Perhaps she wants to keep up
with the technology. Even I have suggested the 'Excel' way as a solution,
everyone told me that was so inconvenient to customize the format each time.
What they expect is an one-click solution and it must be simple. No
application switching required. No third-party components purchasing. Not
using any Crystal-Report. Just manual ASP hand-coding for dynamic reports,
which automatically scale up or down to fit the A4-sized printout.

I've been struggling for this.

Leonard,

Excel sounds good. How about having a play with Office Web
Components (OWC) and opening the spreadsheet in a browser?
Note: licenses for office are required.

There is still one drawback of using OWC for my case. The connection string
may be exposed and it does not benefit for printing the hardcopies.
