Hi all

My printer and old Epson 1200 uses Dye inks, some of the compatible
cartridge makers Boast that their cartridges contain pigment ink. Is
pigment ink really compatible with a printer designed for dye ink.

Thanks

Paul

No it isn't! You should never use pigmented inks in a unit that wasn't
designed to take them - you could end up killing the printer!

Sorry---wrong

MANY people are successfully using pigment in "dye" Epsons. I have
MIS ink in my 1280 and it works flawlessly.

There is nothing intrinsic in the desing of a dye-based printer that
would preclude using pigment ink.

Thanks - my sources (one of them a regular poster here) have informed me
incorrectly.

Thanks for the replies.

From all the info supplied we have the following

From users

1 yes, 1 No, 1 Maybe

From Ink Suppliers

2 No

Not enough info for an accurate assessment but I think I will go with the
Ink suppliers.

Paul;

Your question was:
and the answer.....
From Ink Suppliers

2 No

Why wouldn't they all say YES?

What am I missing?

I had an interesting conversation with a well known ink supplier a trade
show on the subject of dye/pigment compatibility. If I understood the
techno speak, what he said was this.

Dye ink is a dissolved dye in a fluid carrier, it is totally fluid.

Pigment in is a micro particle suspended in a fluid carrier, it is not
totally fluid.

If you use a pigment ink in a printer designed for dye, the pigment
particles will act like a sand blaster and give premature head wear.

He was quite insistent that you should never use pigment inks in a printer
designed for dye.
