dvsd codec

When trying to open an avi (output from WMM2 or WMM1) in VirtualDub, routed
through the AviSynth frame server, I get the following message:

"Avisynth open failure, Avisource: couldn't locate a decompressor for fourcc
dvsd."

Does anyone know how to open Movie Maker avi files in AviSynth? I am
converting some old 8mm film to digital via aerial projection and have found
some VirtualDub and AviSynth filters that claim to correct the temporal
luminosity fluctuations and hot spot effects.

Bob and Rehan,

Thank you for your responses, My understanding was the MM1 ourputs a Type-2
Avi. Is this correct. PapaJohn's web site indicates that MM1 can be used to
convert Type-1 to Type-1. This was the method I used and still got the same
error. If this is not correct, I will download the canopus converter and
give that a shot.

It looks to me that I am missing a codec for MS Avi formats. Although, I am
able to view the files in Medial Player and Edit the files in WMM1 and WMM2
so it seams to me that I should have all the codecs I need for the WMM avi
files. What do you think about the possibility of a codec conflict or
missing codec in this situation?

Thanks for your help,

Ken

VirtualDub does in fact require conversion of the AVI file created by Movie
Maker. I use the Canopus which someone already provided the URL for.

Thank you! The codec from your link did the trick. Actually, the zip file
from that web site was corrupt, or not a standard zip, WinZip gave me errors
and would not open, XP would not open it either. But it gave me a name of a
codec to search for and I found another copy of the Panasonic DV codec.

As a side note, MM1 does output a TypeII and the AVI I had saved previously
now opens in VirtualDub with no conversion. Also AviSynth will open a TypeI
and serve up the frames to VDub without a problem, so you can save a step
and not convert if you use a AviSynth script.

The flicker is gone, the film looks much better! Thank you!
