Anyone explain why no one uses the Dvorak Keyboard?

I guess for the same reason we don't use the metric system.

Does anyone use the Dvorak method?

Just because someone has a better idea...
sure does not mean anyone will go with it :)

Let me guess. You are in the US or UK? I live in an area where we do
use the metric system so do not generalize!

I live in the US...and when I was in school back in the 60's they told us
that we
better get good at the metric system because it was going into full use
within the next few years.
The litre soda bottle is about as far as it's gotten in 40 years now <G>

I do, and enjoy it. It forced me to look away from the
now-incorrect key labels, and I was touch typing in two weeks.

Well, it was reported, recently, that NASA is going metric. Since a
lot of other countries are on the metric system, NASA is going to use
metric units in order to "eliminate" the conversion confusion.

Oh boy I sure hope they don't crash another one :(

That's just it! Now by going metric, all the parts from "over-seas"
will not have to be "converted" to the imperial measurements. Less
chance of mis-calculations.

Yes, of course the metric system is superior...
but there are often problems when people change things...
so I hope things work out ok!

I made one by prying off all the keys of a qwerty keyboard and re-
arranging them. It's a great way to prevent random people from mucking
with the computer. They get all scared.

I haven't quite got the courage to do the same to a laptop keyboard,
though i'm tempted.

I think part of the reason no one uses them is they cost more. And
for no good reason.

It would be a way to learn to touch-type, remap a QWERTY
beard to Davorak and leave the keys alone.

How fast can you type? That is the 1M dollar question.

If you don't think there is a good reason to switch, then there
probably isn't one.

I was also interested in if it could reduce strain on the fingers and
wrist.

Also I have seen plastic you can lay over plastic that you can just
pull up when you are done. I don't know if that would work on
something as small and frequently used as key buttons.

I never learned to touch type. But I'm a few % faster with the Dvorak.
I'm probably not a fair sample, my hands have a very slight shake ever
since I was a child, a gift of anti-seizure medication, which i
thankfully don't need anymore. I have to use qwerty at work, I fix
computers, and customers are a tad sensitive about screwing with their
keyboard layout especially if you forget to turn it back . :)

If I just type, and don't THINK, I'm around 30wpm.

Well, that's the whole point of dvoark. Also if you have already a
case of strain in one hand or the other, there are left and right
handed layouts. Dvorak worked with many amputees to develop these.
